Independent MLA Alex Greenwich was shortlisted for the 2022 McKinnon Political Leader of the Year for his collaborative and effective advancement of a policy platform which seeks to tangibly improve the lives of his constituents with a focus on social justice and addressing complex, systemic social issues.

The Shortlisting Committee commended Greenwich is for his work to steer the Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Bill through the NSW Parliament. Introduced in November 2021, the Bill received assent on 27 May 2022.  Voluntary assisted dying marked the trifecta of landmark social reforms Greenwich has been instrumental in securing, alongside marriage equality in 2018 and the decriminalisation of abortion in 2019. He has also advocated strongly for issues prominent in his electorate such as discrimination against trans women. In introducing the VAD legislation, Greenwich secured the support of 28 members across the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly, and he collaborated for more than 12 months with stakeholders, parliamentarians, and experts in developing the Bill.
